He is one of Italy’s most established directors on the international stage. In 2003, his production of Švanda the Bagpiper by Jaromír Weinberger at the Wexford Festival attracted critical attention, winning the Irish Times ESB Theatre Award. His early operatic credits include La gazza ladra at the Rossini Opera Festival (Abbiati Prize 2008), the Mozart/Da Ponte cycle at La Fenice, Die Entführung aus dem Serail at Teatro di San Carlo, La scala di seta at the ROF and at La Scala, The Greek Passion in Palermo, and Così fan tutte at the New National Theatre in Tokyo. He has also directed La bohème, Falstaff, La Cenerentola and Alcina at the Salzburg Festival; Guillaume Tell and Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci at London’s ROH Covent Garden (Olivier Award 2016); Aquagranda at La Fenice (Abbiati Prize 2017); La damnation de Faust, which inaugurated the 2017/18 season at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma (Abbiati Prize 2018); Jenůfa at the Staatsoper Berlin; A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Vienna; Rigoletto at La Fenice (Abbiati Prize 2022); and La Cenerentola at the Semperoper Dresden. He went on to direct West Side Story at the Caracalla Festival, where he is Artistic Director for the 2025 season, Il nome della rosa by Francesco Filidei at La Scala; La fille du régiment at the Bayerische Staatsoper and Teatro San Carlo; Messiah and Orfeo ed Euridice at the Komische Oper Berlin; Le baruffe by Battistelli at La Fenice; the Italian premiere of Bernstein’s Mass at Caracalla; the world premiere of Animal Farm by Raskatov in Amsterdam and Vienna; Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Sydney Opera House, in Venice and in London; Médée and Salome at La Scala; Carmen at the ROH; Alcina at the Salzburg Festival; and Béatrice et Bénédict in Lyon and Genoa (the first Italian performance of the opera). In 2020 he directed Rigoletto at Rome’s Circus Maximus, later adapted into a film produced by Indigo Film in collaboration with Teatro dell’Opera. In 2021, he directed a cinematic version of Gianni Schicchi for Genoma Films. In 2022, he created Archèus. Labirinto Mozart, an installation for the Venice Biennale. Michieletto has also directed spoken theatre productions, including Goldoni’s Il ventaglio and Gogol’s The Government Inspector for Teatro Stabile del Veneto, The Threepenny Opera at Piccolo Teatro di Milano, and Chekhov’s one-acts at Teatro Goldoni in Venice.
