Born in Naples in 1957, he has always combined his work as a director of theatres and festivals with that of a stage, opera, and radio director. His career began in the field of experimental theatre, taking part twice in the Venice Biennale (1980 and 1982). At a very young age, he founded and directed the Festival delle Ville Vesuviane (1985–1993) and later, in 1998–1999, the small European Festival of Anacapri. In 2000 he was appointed Director of the Teatro Stabile del Veneto, where he remained for ten years. In 2010 he was called to lead the Teatro Stabile di Napoli, where he stayed for nearly a decade while simultaneously directing the Napoli Teatro Festival Italia. In 2021 he became Director of the Teatro Stabile di Catania, and in January 2024 he was appointed Director of the Teatro di Roma – Teatro Nazionale. In all the institutions he has led, he has achieved significant milestones. In Veneto, he expanded the network by adding the venues of Vicenza and Treviso to those of Venice and Padua, and in the same period he created the award Gli Olimpici del Teatro, later renamed Le Maschere del Teatro Italiano, the only national theatre award broadcast on Rai 1. In Naples, he guided the Teatro Mercadante into the prestigious group of National Theatres and, during the same years, revived ancient drama at the Teatro Grande in Pompeii. As a stage director, he has worked with major Italian actors such as Eros Pagni, Gianrico Tedeschi, Mario Scaccia, Massimo Ranieri, Lina Sastri, Elisabetta Pozzi, Galatea Ranzi, and Pamela Villoresi. His productions have been staged in leading Italian theatres and frequently abroad in Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Moscow, and St Petersburg. He has directed three productions for the Greek Theatre of Syracuse, including the centenary performance. As an opera director, he has worked for theatres such as La Fenice in Venice, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, and Fondazione Arena di Verona. He has also created numerous works for Rai Radio 3.
