Born in Ottawa in 1962, he studied at the National Ballet School of Canada with Betty Oliphant, Daniel Seillier and Erik Bruhn. He danced Albrecht in Giselle for his farewell performance and joined the Corps de Ballet of the National Ballet of Canada. In 1980 his admiration for John Cranko led him to the Stuttgart Ballet, where he became a principal dancer, performing roles such as Romeo, Lensky, Siegfried, Lucentio and James. In 1985 he was engaged as a principal dancer with Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo as partner to Ghislaine Thesmar. He went on to dance as a principal with English National Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Scottish Ballet, London City Ballet, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and Teatro alla Scala. He performed works by Balanchine, Tetley, MacMillan, Kylián, Forsythe and Scholz, and partnered Thesmar, Carla Fracci, Lynn Seymour, Natalia Makarova, Eva Evdokimova, Susan Jaffe, Marcia Haydée, Birgit Keil, Luciana Savignano and Elisabetta Terabust. In 1999 he became Ballet Master at the Semperoper Dresden and in 2000 at Leipziger Ballett under Uwe Scholz. As a choreographer, he created La Fille du Danube (1996), La gitana (1996) and Il talismano (1997, Massine Prize). For the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma he created Lungo Viaggio (2000), The Sleeping Beauty (2002), La gitana (2005), La vestale (2006) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2008). In 2009 he created Piaf à Deux and a new version of Romeo and Juliet for Nicolas Le Riche and Clairemarie Osta. From 2005 to 2010 he directed Leipzig Ballett, presenting his own versions of the classics alongside works by Balanchine, Tetley, MacMillan, Robbins, Goecke, Bigonzetti and Spuck, as well as the oeuvre of Scholz. In 2010 he created Chopin racconta Chopin for the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. He served as a jury member for the 2011 Prix de Lausanne. That same year he created Swan Lake for MaggioDanza. In 2013 he was a guest teacher at the Conservatoire National de Paris and created Romeo and Juliet for the Junior Ballet and Cinderella for the Teatr Wielki in Poznań. In 2014 The Sleeping Beauty was revived at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and Cinderella in Ostrava. In 2015 he created The Nutcracker in Bydgoszcz; in 2017 The Three Musketeers; in 2018 a new Romeo and Juliet and again The Three Musketeers in Riga. In 2019 he created La Sylphide in Rome and A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Naples. In 2022 he created The Picture of Dorian Gray. In 2023 The Nutcracker became his eighth production for the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.
